55: Commitment

When you make a choice to do something, commit yourself to it while you are doing it. What so often happens is that people make a choice to do something and then they don't fully commit to it—they don't fully say yes to it while they are doing it. They might complain about doing it, dream about doing something else, or not invest themselves in it, all the while they are doing it. The ego tends to resist and distance itself even from what it chooses to do.

Once something is chosen, the ego often keeps people in situations they aren't happy with by making it difficult for them to see their way out. It keeps them from making a different choice by either confusing them with too many options or shooting down every option that comes along. On the other hand, the ego might suggest making changes constantly as a way of trying to be happy. The ego doesn't know when to stay and when to go! That's the truth.

Listening to the egoic mind will make you miserable, whether or not a choice is the right one from the standpoint of Essence. The mind questions our choices and brings dissatisfaction into every moment. Even when we are aligned with Essence's intentions, the mind often complains, doubts, questions, and judges because that's what the mind does. When that's happening, being true to our choice, even when it's the right one, may be challenging. The mind will make you miserable in the midst of any choice if you let it.

By the way, many choices are perfectly fine with Essence, because we learn from everything we do. There isn't necessarily one “right” choice but almost always many possible paths to take that would be satisfying and fulfill Essence's intentions. However, some choices clearly won't be aligned with Essence, and those are bound to not be fulfilling or make us happy, although we might learn a great deal from them! Essence works hard to steer us toward what will be fulfilling and away from what won't be.

The ego, which operates through our thoughts, doesn't know what will fulfill us, and when we are doing what could fulfill us, the ego doesn't necessarily realize that and may sabotage it. This is challenging but less so when we recognize that thoughts don't have the answer to what to do. Only the silent, subtle wisdom that comes from the Heart (Essence), which is felt and intuited rather than thought, can be trusted to have the answer.

Making a choice and then not fully involving ourselves in what we have chosen makes no sense and only creates suffering. But when we listen to the egoic mind, that's often what happens. You may have the perfect job or relationship for you—the one designed and brought to you by Essence—and you may not realize it and feel discontent and restless.

On the other hand, restlessness or depression may be a sign of not being aligned with Essence. These feelings may be messages from Essence that you need to make a different choice.
